Elizabeth tilt is a cold wax painter —
Loose swirls of oil paint mixed with cold wax counterbalance the detail-oriented regimen of physician life for Dr. Elizabeth Tilt. Trained as a pediatrician in Virginia, the self-taught artist moved to North Carolina in 1995.
Dr. Tilt enjoys the serendipity of transparent and opaque colors as they meld together on wood panels. Inspired by the works of O’Keefe and Matisse, cold wax and oil painting allow the most freedom to express a myriad of emotions.
Often hinting at landscapes, Dr. Tilt’s abstract work starts as an expression of natural events. The conflict of color and beauty versus destruction emerges in the wildness of spring to violent mountain wildfires. Through built-up layers of paint and wax, serene images emerge that belie the chaos of what exists below the surface.
